An autumn weekend in Terchová: a ready-made 2-day itinerary
A ready-made plan for an autumn weekend in Terchová: Saturday in the Jánošíkove diery gorges and the village, Sunday on the ridge below Veľký Kriváň, plus a plan B.

A mountain weekend is most often spoiled by planning too much. This itinerary allows one main outing a day, an unhurried lunch and an evening that does not end in the dark in a car park.
Friday: arrival
From Bratislava airport it is about 215 km to Terchová, just under three hours without delays, and from Kraków airport about three hours. From Vienna, allow roughly three and a half hours. If you arrive early, unpack, light the fire and check Saturday's forecast. If Sunday looks better, simply swap the two days.
Saturday morning: Jánošíkove diery
Aim to reach the car park in Biely Potok in the morning, before queues form at the ladders. The small loop through Nové diery and Dolné diery is five kilometres and takes about three hours, so you are back in the valley for lunch. The route, the direction of the loop and tips for wet days are covered in detail in Jánošíkove diery in autumn.
Saturday afternoon: Terchová
After lunch, head into the village. The statue of Juraj Jánošík stands on a hill towards the Vrátna valley, and from the church a blue-marked trail leads up to the Terchovské srdce lookout tower in about half an hour. If you want to understand why Jánošík is such a big deal here, stop at the Považie Museum's exhibition. Check the opening hours in advance, as they change outside the season.
Saturday evening
Dinner together, the fireplace and a plan for Sunday. Check the forecast in the evening and again in the morning, because it decides whether you go up to the ridge.

Sunday: the ridge below Veľký Kriváň
The Vrátna valley is nine kilometres from the house. The gondola lift takes you from Chata Vrátna up to Snilovské sedlo, and from there it is about 40 minutes to Veľký Kriváň, the highest peak of the Malá Fatra. Up to the summit and back to the saddle fits into under two hours, photos included. If you still have energy, add Chleb on the other side of the saddle. Ride the lift back down and you are on the road home in the afternoon. Check the cable car's operating times on vratna.sk on the day.
Plan B for rain
- the Jánošík and Terchová exhibition in the village,
- a half-hour walk up to the Terchovské srdce lookout tower if the rain is light,
- the nature trail from Štefanová instead of the full gorge loop,
- Žilina, 24 km from the house, for a rainy afternoon in town.
Do not go into the gorges or up to the ridge in heavy rain; both lose their best side when wet and add risk. You will find more routes by fitness level in our overview of autumn hikes.
Where to stay
Chata Ranto is in Nižné Kamence, two kilometres from the centre of Terchová, six from the Jánošíkove diery gorges and nine from the Vrátna valley. The minimum stay is two nights, which fits a Friday to Sunday weekend exactly. The whole house is rented to one group of up to 16 people.
Frequently asked questions
Are two days enough for Terchová?
For a first visit, yes: one day for the gorges and the village, the other for the ridge. For Rozsutec and longer hikes, allow three or four days.
How far is Terchová from the nearest airports?
About 215 km from Bratislava airport, just under three hours by car without delays, and about three hours from Kraków airport. Žilina, the nearest town, is 24 km away.
What can you do in Terchová on a rainy day?
Visit the Jánošík and Terchová exhibition, take a short walk to the lookout tower or drive to Žilina. Leave the gorges and the ridge for a drier day.
When should you set off for Jánošíkove diery?
In the morning. In autumn the days are shorter, and an early start leaves time for lunch and an afternoon programme.
Does the cable car to Snilovské sedlo run at weekends?
Operating times change with the season and the weather, so check them on vratna.sk on the day of your trip.
What is the minimum stay at Chata Ranto?
Two nights, which is exactly a Friday to Sunday weekend. The whole house is for one group of up to 16 people.
