Where to go in Slovakia in autumn: Terchová and the Malá Fatra
Where to go in Slovakia in autumn? The Malá Fatra near Terchová has gorges, a ridge reached by cable car and the Rozsutec peaks, with trails open all autumn.

When people plan an autumn mountain trip to Slovakia, they usually think of the High Tatras first. The Malá Fatra is smaller and quieter, and in autumn it has a few practical advantages that get less attention.
Everything within a few kilometres
Around Terchová, very different trips fit into a small area. The Jánošíkove diery gorges have ladders, footbridges and more than twenty waterfalls. Veľký Rozsutec (1,610 m) is a rocky peak with chains that feels like a much bigger mountain. The ridge below Veľký Kriváň, at 1,709 m the highest peak of the Malá Fatra, is reached by gondola lift from the Vrátna valley. The cycle path from Terchová to Žilina runs for fifteen kilometres on tarmac away from the road. And the village has a culture of its own, from the statue of the folk hero Juraj Jánošík to Terchová music on the UNESCO list.
Autumn without closures
In the Tatra National Park the higher trails are closed each year from 1 November to 31 May. In the Malá Fatra only three sections close, and only in spring, from 1 March to 15 June. In late autumn the Malá Fatra is therefore the more practical choice: the ridge and Rozsutec stay open and only the weather decides.
Getting here
Terchová is 24 km from Žilina, the nearest town. From Bratislava airport it is about 215 km, just under three hours by car without delays, and from Kraków airport about 195 km and roughly three hours. From Vienna, allow about three and a half hours. That makes it a good choice for a long weekend or a week.
A weekend or a longer stay
- A weekend: the gorges on Saturday and the ridge from the cable car on Sunday, described in detail in An autumn weekend in Terchová.
- Three days or more: add Veľký Rozsutec, the Zbojnícky chodník trail or the big gorge loop. See our overview of autumn hikes.
- Your first afternoon: after arriving there is still time for a half-hour walk up to the Terchovské srdce lookout tower.
What to keep in mind
Autumn in the mountains is beautiful and unpredictable at the same time. The cable car does not run the same way every day, so check its timetable on vratna.sk. The ridge can be in fog while the valley is clear, and the gorges are wet after rain. In case of an accident, save the number of the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service, 18 300, in your phone.
