Easy does not mean dull. In Terchová you can reach a viewpoint within two hours, walk past waterfalls, or ride a cable car to the ridge and stroll along it without much climbing. This selection is for families, older walkers and the first day of a stay, when your legs are still warming up.

How to spot an easy hike

For hikes with children, the Vrátna resort advises choosing routes with minimal height gain. Look at the climbing rather than the distance, and at whether you can turn back at any point. Every idea below meets at least one of those tests.

7 ideas

1. The Terchovské srdce lookout tower

From the centre by the church, the blue waymarks lead up Oblaz hill. It is about a kilometre with 80 m of ascent, and at the top stands a 30 m lookout tower that is open all year. Half an hour up, for everyone.

2. Dolné diery there and back

The easiest part of Jánošíkove diery, about an hour each way from Biely Potok, with two waterfalls. Hotel Diery recommends it for children from about four, and you can turn round at any point. Details in Dolné diery. Two hours, from preschoolers up.

3. The Štefanová to Diery nature trail

A loop from Štefanová with ten boards about the national park's nature, about 3 km and 185 m of ascent. It also runs through Nové diery with its ladders, so it suits children who feel steady on ladders. More about the starting point in Štefanová. Two to three hours.

4. The ridge from the cable car via Kriváň and Chleb

The gondola takes you up to Snilovské sedlo, and from there a loop leads over Veľký Kriváň, Chleb and Chata pod Chlebom back to the saddle. It is 7.6 km with 457 m of ascent and takes 3 hours; the resort lists it as suitable for children. Chleb on its own is shorter still. More in The Chleb cable car. Half a day; check it is running on vratna.sk.

5. Paseky and Chata na Grúni

The four-seat chairlift at Paseky takes you up to 1,000 m in 15 to 20 minutes. At the top there is a giant bench and big swings, and an easy walk leads to Chata na Grúni that even small children can manage. Half a day, in summer.

6. A stroll to the Symbolic Cemetery

From Chata Vrátna it is under a kilometre with 46 m of height gain, about 25 minutes. Handy while you wait for the cable car or when the youngest need a short goal. A quarter to half an hour.

7. The cycle path to Žilina

Fifteen kilometres of asphalt away from the road, starting right behind the fence at Chata Ranto. You can walk it, cycle it or push a pushchair along it, and guests at the cottage can use the bikes free of charge. As long as you like, even after rain.

When you want a bit more

The next step up from easy hikes is the small loop through Jánošíkove diery, 5 km in two and a half to three hours. Tips for parents are in Jánošíkove diery with children, and more family trips in Terchová with children in autumn.

From the cottage

Chata Ranto in Nižné Kamence is a few minutes by car from the lookout tower and from Biely Potok, and under twenty minutes from Vrátna. If you want to go without the car, start on the cycle path right from the fence.
