Terchová in autumn: what to see and do in September and October

Autumn in Terchová: the Jánošíkove diery gorges, a cable car to the ridge below Veľký Kriváň, the Rozsutec peaks and golden beech forests.

Summer in Terchová means holidays and full car parks, and winter belongs to the skiers. Autumn is when it is worth coming for the hiking itself. The heat is gone, the ridges stay visible far into the distance and in October the beech forests above the valley start to turn.

Every trail is open

Malá Fatra National Park closes only three trail sections each year, from 1 March to 15 June, while animals raise their young. Autumn is therefore the reverse of spring: more than 150 km of marked trails are open, including the popular climb to Veľký Rozsutec. Current warnings are published by the national park administration and by the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service (HZS), and they are worth a look before any longer hike.

Jánošíkove diery without the summer queue

The gorges above the hamlet of Biely Potok are the most visited place in Terchová. The ladders, footbridges and more than twenty waterfalls are more pleasant in autumn because there are no queues at the ladders. Most people walk the small loop through Nové diery and Dolné diery: from Biely Potok to Ostrvné, up through Nové diery to Podžiar and back down through Dolné diery. It is about five kilometres and takes roughly three hours with breaks.

Nové diery is one way only, walked upstream from Ostrvné to Podžiar. After rain the metal steps and timber are wet, so bring shoes with a good grip and allow extra time.

By cable car to the ridge below Veľký Kriváň

The gondola lift from Chata Vrátna climbs to Snilovské sedlo at 1,524 m in under ten minutes. From the saddle it is about 40 minutes to Veľký Kriváň, at 1,709 m the highest peak of the Malá Fatra, and in the opposite direction to Chleb. If you do not want to walk all the way down, ride the lift back. Operating times change through the autumn with the season and the weather, so check them on vratna.sk on the day.

The Rozsutec peaks for experienced hikers

Veľký Rozsutec (1,610 m) is the best-known peak above Terchová. The shortest route starts in Štefanová and climbs via the Medziholie saddle, first on the green and then on the red trail. It is about five kilometres with 980 m of ascent and takes up to three and a half hours to the top. The final section below the summit is secured with chains, so take care on wet rock. Neighbouring Malý Rozsutec (1,343 m) is lower, but its summit section has chains too.

Terchová without a hike

On a hill above the village, towards the Vrátna valley, stands a seven-and-a-half-metre statue of Juraj Jánošík made of steel plate, created by Ján Kulich in 1988. In the village, the Považie Museum's exhibition "Jánošík and Terchová" covers the legend and traditional village life. With a bit of luck you will also hear Terchová music, a string band tradition on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage since 2013.

Shorter days change the plan

In October it gets dark much earlier than in summer, and the ridge is colder and windier than the valley floor. Start long hikes in the morning, pack layers and a head torch and leave time in reserve for the way back. Install the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service app: when you call 18 300 it sends your location to the rescuers.

Where to stay

Chata Ranto is in Nižné Kamence, two kilometres from the centre of Terchová. The Jánošíkove diery gorges are six kilometres away and the Vrátna valley nine, so each of the trips above is a few minutes' drive. Back from the mountains, there is a stone fireplace in the living room and firewood is included. The whole house is rented to one group of up to 16 people.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Jánošíkove diery gorges open in autumn?

Yes. The seasonal trail closure in the Malá Fatra runs from 1 March to 15 June and does not include the gorges. After heavy rain, though, the ladders and footbridges are slippery and the upper sections can be hard going, so it is better to wait for a drier day.

Does the cable car to Snilovské sedlo run in autumn?

It depends on the season and the weather, so check the operating times on vratna.sk on the day of your trip. The ride from Chata Vrátna itself takes about ten minutes.

Can you climb Veľký Rozsutec in October?

Yes. The Medziholie, Veľký Rozsutec and Medzirozsutce section is closed only in spring. In October, keep the shorter day in mind and remember that the chains below the summit are slippery when wet.

Which hike is the easiest in autumn?

The small loop through the Jánošíkove diery gorges. It is about five kilometres with around 210 m of ascent, and families with children manage it in sturdy shoes.

What should I pack for the Malá Fatra in autumn?

Layers, a waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves for the ridge, and shoes with a good grip. Even on a sunny day Snilovské sedlo is noticeably colder than the valley.

Who do I call if something happens in the mountains?

The Slovak Mountain Rescue Service on 18 300. The HZS app sends your location when you call, and outside the mountains the number is 112.
