Veľký Rozsutec is the peak that keeps bringing people back to Terchová. From the valley the rocky pyramid above Štefanová looks impossible, yet a marked trail leads all the way to the summit. In autumn the views are at their clearest, but the days are shorter and the rock is damp in the morning. This is not a place to set off without a plan.

The shortest route: Štefanová and Medziholie

From the paid car park in Štefanová, the green trail climbs to the Medziholie saddle and the red trail continues to the summit. The route is 5 km with 980 m of ascent, takes up to three and a half hours to the top and is rated difficult by hiking portals. Most people come back down the same way. It is the best choice for October, when it gets dark earlier.

The loop through Horné diery for experienced hikers

If you want to make a full day of Rozsutec, you can walk a loop with a stop in the gorges. It is about 10 km with 1,050 m of ascent. The times for each section:

  • Štefanová to Podžiar: half an hour on the nature trail,
  • Horné diery with its ladders and footbridges: three quarters of an hour,
  • the climb to the Medzirozsutce saddle: three quarters of an hour,
  • along the ridge to Veľký Rozsutec: an hour and a quarter,
  • the steep descent to Medziholie: an hour,
  • Medziholie to Štefanová: an hour and a quarter.

That adds up to about five and a half hours of walking. In autumn it means starting in the morning, or you will do the last section at dusk.

Chains and rock

The final section below the summit is secured with chains. When dry they are a good support; when wet or with the first frost they become the most dangerous part of the day. If there is fog over Rozsutec in the morning and the rock is wet, swap it for the ridge from the cable car or for Jánošíkove diery. On the chains, gloves and sturdy shoes help more than poles, so strap your poles to your pack before you get there.

When to go in autumn

  • September: longer days and drier rock, the best time for the loop through Horné diery.
  • October: stronger colours but shorter days. The shortest route there and back is the safer bet.
  • Late October and November: there may be frost or the first snow below the summit, and conditions on the chains change quickly.

What you see from the top

Below you are Štefanová and the Vrátna valley, opposite is the main Malá Fatra ridge with Veľký Kriváň, and next to you is neighbouring Malý Rozsutec. The jagged ridge between the two Rozsutec peaks is exactly why this hike is worth doing on a clear day rather than in fog.

After the descent

Štefanová is eight kilometres from Chata Ranto, under twenty minutes by car. After a full day on your feet it is good not to have to travel anywhere else: the fire in the living room is going before everyone has had a shower. Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to climb Veľký Rozsutec?

Up to three and a half hours to the summit from Štefanová via Medziholie. Keep the whole day free, as the descent on the chains is not quick.

Is Veľký Rozsutec open in autumn?

Yes. The Medziholie, Veľký Rozsutec and Medzirozsutce section is closed only from 1 March to 15 June.

How difficult is Veľký Rozsutec?

Difficult. It has 980 m of ascent over five kilometres and chains below the summit, so it suits fit hikers who are comfortable with heights.

Can children climb Veľký Rozsutec?

Older, experienced children with an adult who have already managed chains elsewhere. For younger children the small loop through Jánošíkove diery is a better choice.

Where do you park for Veľký Rozsutec?

At the paid car park in Štefanová. The loop through Horné diery also starts and ends there.

Can you climb Veľký Rozsutec in the wet?

It is not recommended. The chains and rock are slippery when wet, and the ridge from the cable car or the small gorge loop is the safer option.
