Rozsutec is the mountain on Terchová's postcards. The dolomite pyramid rises straight above Štefanová and lies within the Rozsutce national nature reserve. This guide covers all the usual routes to the summit, how they compare and what to think about before you even leave the cottage. Tips for shorter autumn days are in Veľký Rozsutec in autumn.

Four ways to the summit

1. From Štefanová via Medziholie. The green waymarks lead to the Medziholie saddle at 1,185 m, then the red ones to the summit. About 5 km and 980 m of ascent, up to three and a half hours to the top. The shortest and most common choice.

2. The loop through Horné diery. From Štefanová on yellow via Vrchpodžiar to Podžiar, on blue through Horné diery to the Medzirozsutce saddle, on red to the summit and down via Medziholie. The municipality gives 10 km and about five and a half hours. The ladder-filled gorges are the starter before the rock; more in Horné diery.

3. Traversing both Rozsutec peaks. From Biely Potok by Hotel Diery to the Medzirozsutce saddle, a detour to Malý Rozsutec, then Veľký Rozsutec and down via Medziholie to Štefanová. The municipality lists it as an alternative for those who want both summits in one day. Plan for a full day and two cars, because the hike ends in a different hamlet.

4. From Zázrivá. From the Malá Petrová part of the village, about half an hour on red to Príslop nad Bielou at 850 m, then on yellow through forest and clearings, on blue below Medziholie and from the saddle on red to the summit, the last section taking about an hour. The municipality gives 12 to 15 km, around 800 m of ascent and roughly five and a half hours.

Chains and an exposed finish

All routes meet on the red waymarks below the summit. There, rocky steps, scree and chain-protected sections alternate, and the municipality describes the terrain as harder and exposed. You need both hands on the chains, so poles go on your backpack and gloves in your pocket. It is not recommended for people without good fitness or for children under about ten.

The spring closure

The red section between Medziholie, Veľký Rozsutec and Medzirozsutce is closed from 1 March to 15 June. Since the only way to the summit is along this red route, during that period you cannot climb Veľký Rozsutec from any side. Outside the closure the path is open, but in winter the rock and chains are often under snow and ice, and the climb is only for experienced hikers with winter equipment.

The view from the top

From the summit you can see Stoh, Chleb, Hromové and, in the distance, Veľký Kriváň, the highest peak of the Malá Fatra. If that is your next goal, read Veľký Kriváň. Below you lie the Vrátna valley and neighbouring Malý Rozsutec.

Who it suits and when

  • Who: fit hikers who are sure-footed and not afraid of heights.
  • Children: according to the municipality, not under about ten, and older ones only with experience on chains.
  • Weather: only when dry; wet rock and metal below the summit are slippery.
  • Timing: in summer start in the morning, as storms mostly come in the afternoon.
  • Emergencies: the Slovak mountain rescue service, HZS, is on 18 300.
