It has the cable car to the main ridge, the highest peak of the Malá Fatra, the rock towers of the Rozsutec peaks and the hamlet of Štefanová, where most waymarked trails begin. This guide will help you get your bearings before you set off.

Tiesňavy: the gateway to the valley

The road into Vrátna runs through the gorge of the Vrátňanka stream. On both sides stand dolomite rock formations with names such as Mních, Ťava, Skalné mesto and Päť furmanov, and the whole gorge is a national nature reserve. The Zbojnícky chodník trail starts from the Tiesňavy car park, and above the gorge rises Boboty, a quieter hill with a ridge two and a half kilometres long.

Beyond Tiesňavy the valley divides into Stará dolina and Nová dolina, ringed by Boboty, Veľký Rozsutec, Stoh, Poludňový grúň, Chleb, Veľký Kriváň, Kraviarske and Sokolie.
