3 days in Terchová: an itinerary for a long weekend

Three days in Terchová: the gorges and the village, the ridge from the cable car, then Rozsutec, the Outlaws' Trail or thermal pools on day three. A ready-made plan.

Living room with sofas and a TV

A long weekend is the ideal length for Terchová. You get three different faces of the Malá Fatra, gorges, ridge and rock, with time left over for the village and an evening by the fire. The plan below assumes the weather will reshuffle things, so every day has a plan B.

Before you go

  • Check the forecast for all three days and keep the driest one for the ridge or Rozsutec.
  • From 1 March to 15 June the section over Veľký Rozsutec and part of the Zbojnícky chodník are closed. Malý Rozsutec and Jánošíkove diery stay open.
  • Check the cable car to Snilovské sedlo on vratna.sk.

Day 1: Jánošíkove diery and the village

In the morning, the small loop through Jánošíkove diery: from Biely Potok to Ostrvné, up through Nové diery to Podžiar and back through Dolné diery. Five kilometres and about three hours, with parking at the paid car park in front of Hotel Diery. Lunch in Terchová.

In the afternoon, the Terchová nativity scene in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius with its 80 moving figures, then the Jánošík statue, and towards evening a half-hour walk to the Terchovské srdce lookout tower. For the full list of places see Things to see in Terchová.

If it rains: the Jánošík and Terchová exhibition and the nativity scene, and move the gorges to another day.

Day 2: Vrátna and the ridge

On the way to Vrátna, stop in the Tiesňavy canyon by the Mních rock. The gondola lift takes you from Chata Vrátna to Snilovské sedlo at 1,524 m, and from there it is 40 minutes to Veľký Kriváň, the highest peak of the Malá Fatra. The resort gives the route over Kriváň and Chleb to the Chata pod Chlebom hut as 7.6 km and three hours. In the afternoon it is worth stopping in Štefanová below Rozsutec.

If the ridge is in fog or the cable car is not running: the nature trail from Štefanová to the gorges, three kilometres with ten information boards, or the quieter Boboty ridge.

Day 3: choose to suit your group

  • Veľký Rozsutec for experienced hikers: 5 km from Štefanová with 980 m of ascent and chains below the summit. More in Veľký Rozsutec in autumn.
  • Malý Rozsutec if you want rock in half a day: the traverse from Štefanová to Biely Potok, 9 km and about four hours. Two cars help; see Malý Rozsutec.
  • Zbojnícky chodník: a loop from Tiesňavy with iron steps and cables, three to four hours.
  • A rest day: the thermal pools in Rajecké Teplice, 37 km from the house, or Strečno Castle on the way home. More ideas in What to do in Terchová when it rains.

The evenings

Three days in the mountains also means three evenings. The whole group fits around the fireplace in the living room, the three kitchens let several people cook at once, and there is table tennis on the covered terrace. Nobody has to drive anywhere in the evening.

Where to stay

Chata Ranto in Nižné Kamence is ten minutes by car from Biely Potok and under twenty from Štefanová and the cable car in Vrátna, so every day starts without a long drive. For a long weekend book three nights, which fall under the 2 to 5 night price. More about the house in An autumn stay in a cottage.

Frequently asked questions

Are three days enough for Terchová?

Yes, for the main sights: the gorges, the ridge from the cable car and one rocky peak or the Zbojnícky chodník. To see everything in the area you would need a week.

In what order should I plan the days?

By the weather. Keep the ridge and Rozsutec for the driest, clearest day; the gorges and the village work in changeable weather too.

What can we do on day three if we do not want a hard hike?

Visit the thermal pools in Rajecké Teplice, Strečno Castle or take a short hike on the Boboty ridge. All are within an hour's drive.

Can the itinerary be done without a car?

Partly. SAD Žilina buses run to Terchová, Štefanová and the cable car in Vrátna, but a car helps for the Malý Rozsutec traverse and trips further afield.

Does this plan work in spring?

From 1 March to 15 June the section over Veľký Rozsutec and part of the Zbojnícky chodník are closed. On day three choose Malý Rozsutec or the big gorge loop instead.

How many nights should we book?

Three nights, for example Thursday to Sunday. The minimum stay at Chata Ranto is two nights, and three nights are charged at the 2 to 5 night rate.
