Terchová: a complete guide for your first visit
First time in Terchová? Where everything is, how to get here by car or bus, what to see in a day or a week, when to come and what to check before you travel.

Illustrative image of the area
On the map Terchová looks like a single village, but it is really several hamlets spread along a valley, and above it begins the busiest part of the Malá Fatra. First-time visitors often do not know where to look for what. This guide will help you get your bearings and plan your first days.
Where everything is
- The village centre with the church, shops and restaurants. From the church, a blue-marked trail leads up to the Terchovské srdce lookout tower on the hill of Oblaz.
- The Jánošík statue stands on a hill above the village, towards the Vrátna valley.
- Biely Potok is the hamlet where Jánošíkove diery begins. There is a paid car park in front of Hotel Diery and a bus stop called Terchová, Biely Potok h. Diery.
- Štefanová is the main gateway to the Vrátna valley and the start of the climbs to Veľký and Malý Rozsutec.
- The Vrátna valley opens beyond the Tiesňavy canyon, through which the only road from the village runs. The lower station of the gondola lift to Snilovské sedlo is at Chata Vrátna.
- Nižné Kamence is the lower end of Terchová, towards Žilina, where Chata Ranto stands.
Getting here
By car, Terchová is 24 km from Žilina. From Bratislava airport it is about 215 km and just under three hours, from Kraków airport about 195 km and three hours, and from Vienna about 300 km and three and a half hours.
Without a car, take the train to Žilina and then the SAD Žilina regional bus on the Žilina, Terchová, Vrátna line. At Žilina station take care: some services end in Terchová, and only the bus marked Terchová, Vrátna continues to the valley. The stop at the cable car is called Vrátna, výťah.
What to see
- One day: the small loop through Jánošíkove diery (5 km, about three hours), then the statue, the church and the lookout tower in the afternoon.
- A weekend: the gorges and the village on Saturday, the cable car to Snilovské sedlo and Veľký Kriváň on Sunday. There is a ready-made plan in An autumn weekend in Terchová.
- A week: add Veľký or Malý Rozsutec, the Zbojnícky chodník trail, the big gorge loop and trips to Strečno Castle, Orava Castle or the thermal spa in Rajecké Teplice. You will find an overview of hikes in our autumn hikes and rainy-day ideas in What to do in Terchová when it rains.
Jánošík and Terchová
Juraj Jánošík was born in Terchová in 1688 and executed in Liptovský Mikuláš in 1713. The historical outlaw became a folk hero, a kind of Slovak Robin Hood, and the village shows it at every turn. The seven-and-a-half-metre statue above the village was made by Ján Kulich in 1988. The Považie Museum's exhibition "Jánošík and Terchová" covers both the legend and everyday village life. Every summer the village hosts the international folk festival Jánošíkove dni, with its main programme in the Nad Bôrami amphitheatre, and since 2013 Terchová music has been on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
The church and the moving nativity scene
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the village centre was consecrated in 1949 and is the largest church dedicated to these saints in Slovakia. In its entrance hall is the Terchová nativity scene, the oldest carved moving wooden nativity scene in Slovakia. Local carver Štefan Hanuliak began it with friends in 1976, and it has 80 moving figures. It is worth a stop even outside Christmas.
When to come
- Spring: from 1 March to 15 June three trail sections in the national park are closed, including Veľký Rozsutec.
- Summer: the most visitors, Jánošíkove dni and full car parks at the gorges.
- Autumn: all trails open, fewer visitors and colourful beech forests. See Terchová in autumn.
- Winter: skiing in the Vrátna valley at Paseky, Poludňový grúň and Chleb.

What to check before you travel
The cable car's operating times on vratna.sk, the opening hours of the exhibition and the nativity scene, which change outside the season, and the weather on the ridge, not just in the valley. The car parks at the gorges, in Štefanová and at the cable car all charge a fee. In case of an accident, save the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service number, 18 300.
Where to stay
Chata Ranto in Nižné Kamence is two kilometres from the centre, ten minutes by car from the gorges and under twenty from Vrátna. The whole house is rented to one group of up to 16 people; see An autumn stay in a cottage in Terchová for details.
