The list below is not a ranking. It follows the order in which you would reach the places going from the village up into the mountains, and each one comes with a note on how much time to allow. If you are looking for orientation, where things are and how to get here, see our first-visit guide.
In the village
1. The Terchová nativity scene
The entrance hall of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius houses the oldest carved moving wooden nativity scene in Slovakia, with 80 moving figures. Its three parts show old Terchová with its crafts, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Time: half an hour. For everyone, including small children.
2. The Jánošík and Terchová exhibition
The Považie Museum shows a traditional Terchová room, the history of the village and how an outlaw became a folk hero. Time: an hour. Check the opening hours in advance.
3. The Jánošík statue
The seven-and-a-half-metre figure in steel plate stands on a hill above the village towards the Vrátna valley. It was put up in 1988 for the 300th anniversary of Jánošík's birth. Time: a quarter of an hour.
4. The Terchovské srdce lookout tower
A thirty-metre tower on the hill of Oblaz, half an hour from the church on the blue trail. From the top you see the village and both Rozsutec peaks. Time: an hour there and back. For everyone.
On the way into the mountains
5. The Tiesňavy canyon
The gateway to the Vrátna valley, carved by the Vrátňanka stream. The road runs straight through the canyon between dolomite rocks, some of which have names: Mních (the Monk), Ťava (the Camel), Skalné mesto (Rock Town) and Päť furmanov (Five Carters). The best known is the kneeling Monk at the entrance to the canyon. Tiesňavy is a national nature reserve. Time: a short stop on the way to Vrátna.
6. The Obšívanka valley and the Zbojnícky chodník
A side valley within Tiesňavy with a pronounced temperature inversion, where dwarf pine grows as low as 660 m. The section up to the Malé nocľahy junction is closed from 1 March to 15 June to protect the peregrine falcon. The Zbojnícky chodník (Outlaws' Trail) loop runs through it, with iron steps and cables, taking three to four hours. For fitter hikers, on a dry day.
7. Štefanová
A hamlet below Veľký Rozsutec and the main gateway to the Vrátna valley, with a car park, restaurants and an information centre. Even if you are not hiking, the view of Rozsutec from here is worth a stop.
In the mountains
8. Jánošíkove diery
Gorges with ladders, footbridges and more than twenty waterfalls above the hamlet of Biely Potok. The small loop is five kilometres and takes about three hours. Details in Jánošíkove diery in autumn. For families with school-age children.
9. Snilovské sedlo and Veľký Kriváň
Ten minutes by gondola from Chata Vrátna to the saddle at 1,524 m, then 40 minutes to Veľký Kriváň (1,709 m), the highest peak of the Malá Fatra. Time: half a day. Check the cable car's operating times on vratna.sk.
10. Veľký Rozsutec
The rocky symbol of Terchová at 1,610 m. From Štefanová it is 5 km with 980 m of ascent and chains below the summit. More in Veľký Rozsutec in autumn. A full day, for experienced hikers.
11. The Boboty ridge
A two-and-a-half-kilometre rocky ridge between Tiesňavy and Jánošíkove diery, topping out at 1,085 m. The summit itself is wooded, but viewpoints along the ridge look out over Vrátna, Kriváň, Chleb and Rozsutec. Far fewer people come here than to the gorges. For those looking for peace and quiet.
12. The cycle path to Žilina
Fifteen kilometres of tarmac away from the road, crossing wooden bridges along the stream. At Chata Ranto it starts right behind the fence. By bike or on foot, even after rain.

How to fit it together
One day is enough for the village and the gorges. For a weekend add the cable car, and for a week add Rozsutec, Obšívanka and Boboty. When it rains, see What to do in Terchová when it rains. Everything here is within twenty minutes' drive of Chata Ranto in Nižné Kamence; there is more about the house in An autumn stay in a cottage.
