Terchová has views for every fitness level. Some take half an hour's walk from the church, others a cable car, and the very best a full day on your feet. Here are ten places, starting with the easiest, each with what you will see and what it costs you to get up there.

Views without much effort

1. The Terchovské srdce lookout tower

A 30 m tower on Oblaz hill above the village, about half an hour from the church on the blue waymarks. From the top you can see Terchová and both Rozsutec peaks. It is open all year, so it works for a winter afternoon too.

2. Snilovské sedlo and the Panoráma terrace

The gondola takes you in a few minutes to the top station at 1,494 m, where the Panoráma restaurant has a viewing terrace. You get a look at the Malá Fatra ridge without a single step uphill. More in The Chleb cable car.

3. Paseky

By the top station of the Paseky chairlift, at 1,000 m, there is a giant bench and big swings, a popular spot for photos. A four-seat chairlift takes you up, in 15 to 20 minutes in summer.

The main ridge

4. Veľký Kriváň

The highest peak of the Malá Fatra, 1,709 m. From the cable car it is 40 minutes on the red waymarks with 200 m of ascent; on foot from Vrátna it takes all day. Details in Veľký Kriváň.

5. The ridge via Chleb and Hromové to Poludňový grúň

An open ridge with a high-mountain feel, with Veľký Rozsutec and Veľký Kriváň in front of you. From the cable car it is 6.5 km and about 2 hours 45 minutes, and you can descend to Chata na Grúni and take the chairlift down to Paseky.

Summits for fit hikers

6. Stoh

A grassy summit at 1,607 m with perhaps the widest view in the area. In good weather you can see Veľký Rozsutec, Poludňový grúň, Veľký Choč, Šíp, the Western Tatras and Kráľova hoľa. From Štefanová it is an 11 km loop taking up to six hours.

7. Veľký Rozsutec

Terchová's rocky emblem, 1,610 m. From the summit you can see Stoh, Chleb, Hromové and, in the distance, Veľký Kriváň. The way up uses chains, and it is closed from 1 March to 15 June. More in Veľký Rozsutec.

8. Malý Rozsutec

The smaller brother, with rock overhangs below the summit, 1,343 m. On the climb from Zázrivá you have Osnica, Stoh and Veľký Rozsutec ahead of you. All routes to the top are in Malý Rozsutec.

9. Osnica

A quiet peak at 1,362 m with a grassy summit and a rocky outcrop. On a clear day you can see Veľký Rozsutec, the Low and Western Tatras, Babia Góra and Veľký Choč. From Štefanová, 10.3 km and about 4 hours 15 minutes.

Quiet places

10. The Boboty ridge

A ridge two and a half kilometres long between Tiesňavy and Jánošíkove diery, with its summit at 1,085 m. The summit itself is overgrown, but the viewpoints along the ridge look out over Vrátna, Kriváň, Chleb and Rozsutec, and fewer people come here.

Bonus tip: Sokolie, 1,171.5 m, whose ridge is reached on the green waymarks from Starý dvor in the Vrátna valley. A lesser-known viewpoint for anyone who wants the view to themselves.

When the view is best

  • The air is usually clearer in the morning, and there are fewer people on the summits.
  • It is windy and colder on the ridge than in the valley, so a windproof jacket and hat are useful even in summer.
  • In strong wind the cable car may stop, so check it is running on vratna.sk.
  • In summer, storms mostly build in the afternoon, so head for the summits early.

The view from the cottage

The rocky ridges of the Malá Fatra are visible even from the garden of Chata Ranto in Nižné Kamence. In the morning they tell you whether it is clear up high, and Štefanová and the cable car are under twenty minutes away by car.
